All that is subject to arising is subject to ceasing.
All things that are conglomerations of the five elements,
Of earth, air, fire, water and space;
All things that are the phenomena of consciousness,
Thought, emotion, concept, interpretation, understanding and misunderstanding;
Even consciousness itself arises and then ceases.
In this way, everything is the same.
All outward appearances seem to arise in space.
All objects of earth, air, fire, and water,
Seem to exist in the open, empty, all-accommodating field that we call space.
All inward experiences seem to arise in the space of awareness.
Thought, emotion, concept, interpretation, understanding and misunderstanding,
Both experience of the world and the sense of self,
Seem to arise in the open, empty, all-accommodating space of awareness.
In this way, external space and internal awareness are similar.
External objects seem to be separate from internal experiences
Due to the concept of self and other,
But clearly all experience – both inner and outer – arise only in awareness.
The concept of self and other is one of the universe of things that arise only in awareness.
Like ice is an expression of water,
Our natural awareness of self and of the world
Is an expression of the cognizant nature of innermost awareness.
Innermost awareness is not tied to self or to the world,
Not dependent on self and world for its existence,
Because innermost awareness is the cognizant space in which all phenomena,
Both inner and outer,
Arise and cease.
Like gentle touch is an expression of love,
The manifest quality of outer appearances
Is an expression of the compassionate nature of innermost awareness.
Innermost awareness is not tied to the quality of experiences,
Not made of cause and effect,
Because innermost awareness is the open space in which all phenomena,
Both inner and outer,
Arise and cease.
Like a candle flame is an expression of the sun,
Our understanding of these natural truths
Is an expression of the wisdom nature of innermost awareness.
Innermost awareness is not tied to concepts and understanding,
Not made of thoughts and judgments,
Because innermost awareness is the wisdom in which all natural truths,
Both inner and outer,
Arise and cease.
Innermost awareness is the basis of all conglomerations of earth, air, fire, water, and space;
It is the basis of thought, emotion, concept, interpretation, understanding and misunderstanding;
It is the basis of awareness and of the sense of self.
Innermost awareness is an open, empty, all-accommodating spaciousness in which all objects arise;
It is a cognizant, wakeful, all-accommodating wisdom in which all experiences arise;
It is the compassionate, manifold capacity of self-revealing natural truth.
As the basis of all experience, both of the so-called outer world and inner experience,
Innermost awareness does not arise or cease;
It is the space into which all arises and the space into which all ceases.
