ART

FUSION OF LIGHT AND SILENCE

Whenever we call for Guru, The sun expands itself, The flowers blossom, The birds sing harmoniously, As a whisper of a sweet voice, Flowing from the heart of a beautiful princess, sleeping in the mountains of Northern India.

THE ALCHEMY OF GREAT COMPASSION

A personal account centered around the remarkable Buddhist master Fish Guru, as he is known around Kolkata, who bought millions of live fish to release into the sacred Indian river Ganges.

JUST AS MIST ON A MIRROR FADES

In collaboration with a video developer, musician and composer, the movements allows for the transforming, dissolving of forms and ground creating a spacious reflecting mandala that attempts to mirror the motivation of the original intent of Martha’s paintings and textures.

A TRUE MAN OF THE SARANGI

There are old, soulful musicians. Their music has soul and is alive in a way that has a tinge of magic attached to it. By that token, they have been considered to be at least one step closer to the divine. Such a man was Ustad Sabri Khan.

LISTEN UP – MILAREPA SINGS

Listen dear, listen up Rechungpa, your old man Milarepa here, I sleep sometimes & sleeping. . . meditate, sleeping & sleeping, just that is meditation, the murky fog turns clear, there’s a way & I’m the guy who knows how others don’t, but if they did, I’d be happy.

PURE VIEW RAPTURE

Pure view means understanding all forms as the body of deity, clearly appearing yet empty of inherent solidity, all sounds as the tune of mantra, naturally free in the expanse of open awareness, resounding like echoes, and all mental events as inseparable from their essence, substanceless knowing.

ART IS FOR TRANSFORMATION

I come from a long line of sufi saints who brought Sufism to Bangladesh. It’s quite a spiritual approach; my work isn’t religious, it just reflects the way I am in my life.

SONG OF ENLIGHTENMENT

The Song of Enlightenment is a Chan Buddhist poem that dates back to the middle years of the Tang Dynasty. The text is attributed to the poet-monk Yongjia Xuanjue who was a disciple of Huineng, the Sixth Patriarch in the Chan line and the founder of the Southern School of Enlightenment, which puts him and this text in the direct up line of the great Zen tradition.

INVESTIGATING THE MIND THROUGH ART

My work is driven by a curiosity into the investigation of mind thru art. None of us can avoid thoughts, but through awareness of our pitfalls, beauty, strengths and weaknesses we can open windows into the mind. The core of my contemplative art practice is to visually embody the blind spots as a result of our thoughts.

MANDALA ART AS THERAPY

A year ago I was hospitalized and created a new mandala each day for healing purposes. It helped me calm my mind, and each day the mandalas improved as well as my health, an amazing parallel healing process, both physical and spiritual from the very deep tissue level.

PARIS, CITY OF LIGHT

The melancholy and dark approach somehow fit the frustration and sadness that hit me in the light of the sad events that happened at venues, cafes and in the streets of Paris, November 13, 2015. This is a tribute to peace and the multicultural City of Light.

WHO ARE YOU? I AM CAESAR

Lying to ourselves, Every day in a million ways, Pretending to be a little more green, special, a little more enlightened, a little more yogi, pretending to be a little more wise, smart, tough, retrospective, wiseass, noble, athletic, gentle, colloquial, worldly, competent, competitive.

A CHARIOT FOR KNOWLEDGE-HOLDERS

The voice belongs to a yogi. He has for some reason felt compelled to give me a small stack of single sheets of script in Tibetan writing or print. He disappears right away into the mist. I sit in a little cave above the Lotus Lake in Himachal Pradesh and happily open up the cloth-wrapped stack of pages.

JOURNEY OF ASCENSION

When creativity comes to us, knocks hard at our door, we can’t ignore it, we have to listen, we have to let go of what we are doing and submit in that precise moment, if not it will follow us, and continue to. We do not choose an idea, more often it chooses us and we have to manifest the idea, or be in pursuit of it.

ART CLASS & AUSPICIOUS CONNECTIONS

On the first day I decided to see if they were able to handle an open expanse, not to give them direction. They had received many arts and crafts lessons creating marvelous things but had always worked within given perimeters. What I wanted was for them to explore their own imaginings.
