30 PIECES OF USELESS REMARKS

1. The fastest route to uniqueness: do not strive to be original, don’t be afraid to be dull and uninteresting. You must have the courage to choose your fate despite the whole world, despite the mainstream and intellectual fads.

THE POWER OF THE PURR

  • by

Isn’t a ROAR designed to impress or intimidate others? I mean, look at a pride of lions? It also seems, rather wrapped up in the me, myself and I, and less of the compassionate service to others. Unless it’s fiercely defending someone. But it leads me to wonder if there is so much intent on finding that ROAR these days that we are forgetting how to purr?

SPIRITUALITY ISN’T ROCKET SCIENCE

The West has a very strong tradition for doing science. In fact, the tradition has been so firmly established as our fundamental worldview, that it is often overlooked as being exactly that: One of many possible worldviews. But the scientific way of thinking wasn’t always around.

LISTEN UP – MILAREPA SINGS

Listen dear, listen up Rechungpa, your old man Milarepa here, I sleep sometimes & sleeping. . . meditate, sleeping & sleeping, just that is meditation, the murky fog turns clear, there’s a way & I’m the guy who knows how others don’t, but if they did, I’d be happy.

RETHINKING MINDFULNESS

An invitation to broaden our understanding of mindfulness by looking at the original sources, the importance of ethics and our intention. Includes a discussion on how mindfulness teachers can upgrade their skills.

LIGHT – THE UNIVERSAL POWER

Light is subtler than the subtle. It is the invisible essence of every thing and it is the boundless sustaining power of the whole universe upon which all existence rests. Light is the fundamental reality of life itself, a non-dual understanding of the universe.

PURE VIEW RAPTURE

Pure view means understanding all forms as the body of deity, clearly appearing yet empty of inherent solidity, all sounds as the tune of mantra, naturally free in the expanse of open awareness, resounding like echoes, and all mental events as inseparable from their essence, substanceless knowing.

INNER LUMINOSITY

Often we look for healing outside of ourselves, for someone who can fix us or heal us. But in looking outside of ourselves, we give our own inner healing power away, leaving us unempowered instead of empowered. In essence, we can only heal ourselves; no one can do that for us, not even a Buddha. Someone can show us the way or can be a facilitator, but we still have to do the hard work ourselves.

THE TWENTY-FIVE TANTRIC VIEWS

The meditator can take the inner journey of experience through Vajrayana’s twenty-five levels of understanding reality. All twenty-five share the same essence of oneness, the awakened mind of all buddhas.

DIY TINY HANGING VASE

It’s fun to beautify your world. Beth shares how to do-it-yourself hanging vases. Combine it with mindful kindness and you have a perfect gift for someone special.

ART IS FOR TRANSFORMATION

I come from a long line of sufi saints who brought Sufism to Bangladesh. It’s quite a spiritual approach; my work isn’t religious, it just reflects the way I am in my life.

SONG OF ENLIGHTENMENT

The Song of Enlightenment is a Chan Buddhist poem that dates back to the middle years of the Tang Dynasty. The text is attributed to the poet-monk Yongjia Xuanjue who was a disciple of Huineng, the Sixth Patriarch in the Chan line and the founder of the Southern School of Enlightenment, which puts him and this text in the direct up line of the great Zen tradition.

DANCING WITH FEAR

Zombiism is a word that encapsulates the rise of a modern trend; the age of the living dead. When having too much of everything has simply overwhelmed the senses and left an awful lot of people in a semi-conscious state.

MEDITATING MORE THAN AN HOUR

If you are meditating to go beyond mindfulness, seeking insights, vipassana, then I recommend sitting for more than an hour because your mind needs time to let go, and then the really interesting things start.

LET’S PLAY

We sit in a circle. I wait until the group is silent, and then we begin. First I shake my hands in the air and the kids join in automatically. Then we tap on our knees, soft, louder, soft again, we tap on our chests and cheeks. The kids focus to not miss a gesture and follow the dynamics joyfully.

EXPANDING INTO THE UNKNOWN

I walked through life like a horse with blinkers on the side, not seeing clearly. But after this experience, between the majestic trees, I realized that I was not seeing through blinkers at all. Instead, I realized that my eyes had been covered over completely! I had been stumbling in the dark for all these years!

INVESTIGATING THE MIND THROUGH ART

My work is driven by a curiosity into the investigation of mind thru art. None of us can avoid thoughts, but through awareness of our pitfalls, beauty, strengths and weaknesses we can open windows into the mind. The core of my contemplative art practice is to visually embody the blind spots as a result of our thoughts.

POEMS FROM A RETREAT CABIN

I sit in the same seat, staring at the same sky, as I have the last three years, on the bones of the morning, fleshing out with joyful diligence my heart’s expanse, that lucid cognizance, the sun’s rays bring to the sky.
