EMPTYINGNESS OR THE PART OF WHOLENESS

  • by

Most of it is forever now, an emptying, recovering, trust to be…
I arrived in this ancient venture I’ve no where to go but to where I am already.
They call it crazy and they are… You don’t have other place to be
but here, to complete.

A POEM TO THE GURU

This poem is written by the contemporary Tibetan poet Sangdor and is part of a forthcoming book of his poetry in English translation. Sangdor was born in the Lake Regions of Amdo and recognized as a highly revered reincarnated master. However, in his 20’s announced that he was not actually this master nor was he a monk any longer and thereby returned his robes.

WHY THE BUDDHA LAUGHS

As my meditations and contemplations deepened, I noticed a shift in my writing. I began to experience what felt like direct transmissions from the Source. Wisdom, uncluttered and unfiltered by my ego, began pouring out of me and onto the page. I imagine that all Gnostics or mystics throughout time have written from these deep meditative states.

SARASWATI

Better to buy a book than to buy weed! Sit, and do your meditation. Go, go, to the cemetery, practice there!’ So I did, for many, many years, night and day. Even though I was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder aged twenty-five after many hospital admissions, only my practice kept me well. My faith grew exponentially as a result of this. Even though people mocked me, laughed at me and called me a madman, I continued practicing.

ARTIST OF LIFE

I am facing the loss of an old friend and she is, by turns, weak and failing and then blooming with renewed energy. The spark in her eyes returned as bright as ever. The ebb and flow so remarkable and yet so sudden as to question my role in this play. Who am I to decide when pain and suffering is too much to bear?

THE BEAUTY OF THE LAND

Just as the divine longs to communicate through and as appearance, so land longs to communicate her sacredness through beauty. She seduces us into deeper communion, into a more attentive listening, with her sensuous invitations. Her beauty is so outrageous that it might even confuse our senses. Befuddled by her, one day I decided to buy a camera so I could listen more carefully.

KING GESAR – A WARRIOR OF FEARLESS COMPASSION

Gesar is inspired by fearless compassion. Unafraid of chaos, he is able to uncover a path of wakefulness and harmony even in the most perilous and compromising situations. His unconditional commitment to others gives birth to the confidence that always uncovers spontaneous, precise and vital expressions of enlightened mind.

CALLING THE GURU FROM AFAR

There is one meditation song in particular that opens up your mind. Practitioners sing it to call upon inspiration in times of need, to understand the hindrances for love and kindness, which are selfishness and basic unknowing, and to see the difference between being open or distracted during meditation. In that opening, we can experience how the awakened state is in actuality. Here is a version with soundtrack and lyrics, so you can sing along.

THE FRUIT OF PRACTICE

Some of the visual elements in my work: The plumb bob is used in construction to ensure that structures are vertical. I use it more as a symbol for finding the right balance in one’s meditation and life. Are we aligned, for example, with what is true? Are we in line with how phenomena and the mind actually exist, and not how we think they exist? The archeological marker is often a standing for mindfulness.

LONGCHENPA’S BARDO ASPIRATION

The culture we live in is dominated by these ideas, that we are just this human body, and when it ends we are no more. There is however an entirely different perspective, presented by the buddhas in the tantric texts: This present mind that knows and feels lives in the body, but is not of the body. It is unlike any other thing we know in life, because mind is neither something nor nothing. Think about it!

YOUR WORLD HAS NO HYPOCRISY

Your world has no hypocrisy. It is bright; even darkness is bright; dinner happens in the morning light. Your speech, so well remembered, cuts through naïve beliefs, pops depression, brings a smile to the eyes. To the one who showed me the world, I sing this little song of remembrance and pay homage ceaselessly.

DESI DONUTZ

From musician and poet Yeshen, a mood-reading with instrumental soundtrack and free-flowing poetry. Desi Donutz, a poem dedicated to Saraswati.

LOITERING OUTSIDE THE VAJRA VARAHI CAVE

I sang echoes of the past ages, Blessed were the words I sang, I sang with eyes shut and heart wide open, I believe that when there is no beginning there can never be an end. As naked as the wind I sat in freedom, as clouded as the clouded sky came my thoughts, I stared deep into thin air, and I found myself absorbed, again no where.

REFLECTIONS

NO! Not Now but NOW! Most people associate Now with time and space. The ultimate Now is a self-existing awareness beyond the dualistic concern of ‘here and now’ and ‘there and then’ which are concepts of time and space. The authentic Now concerns not time and space. It is just a simple and natural presence. It is not what we experience nor is it different.
